Justin Pratt
2008 National Winner

Justin was educated early in life on the benefits that can be gained from good financial advice.

He says that many real life experiences have paved the way to provide a first hand insight and understanding of just how important the state of a person’s finances is on their overall wellbeing. Justin believes that these experiences as well as time and education have transformed him into a person with a newfound passion for the financial planning industry.

Justin started his broad and lengthy training and qualifications at University, with a Bachelors Degree in Commerce. He has an Advanced Diploma in Financial Advising and is continuing his progression through the Certified Financial Planner program offered by the Financial Planning Association. He has been through several internal training courses with employers such as Mercer and AMP, including the highly regarded AMP Adviser School. Justin believes that all these steps have been essential in the journey that has helped him to assist many other individuals with their financial circumstances along the way.

Justin also took some time out a few years ago to travel overseas and work in London. He was proud that the Australian financial advice industry was in many ways superior and maintained to such high standards. On returning to Australia he had no qualms about re-entering the workforce in Australia as a paraplanner.

Justin says his greatest achievements in this field have come when he has been able to add value to a client’s situation. He believes there is always some area that a paraplanner can help a person’s unique set of circumstances. He thinks of paraplanners as the financial equivalent of the medical general practitioner - they can bandage a surface wound, provide a remedy to treat an ailment or refer someone to a specialist.

Justin looks forward to the future in his role as a paraplanner - expanding his knowledge piece by piece, and working in a constantly changing landscape. But he is constantly focused on trying to be the person that teaches the basics of financial planning and living within your means, especially given peoples' inordinate cupidity for wealth.

Justin believes that the secret to wealth is not what you earn, it is what you spend. That to be frugal for a while means in the long run you will eventually receive everything that you desire. He also believes it is important to understand the valuable lesson that money can't buy happiness, however, if your finances are under control it allows you to focus on the really important things in life such as family, friends and passions.

Justin would eventually like to educate the masses about their finances yet he believes that a paraplanner does this already on a smaller scale and with a more precise approach.

But more importantly he is looking at graduate studies in Philanthropy and advising people on how to donate money to support a charitable cause. In his opinion this is the most worthwhile way to promote good and improve human quality of life for the better.
